My Dad Survived West Nile Virus

August 5, 2004 started out as just another
day of summer vacation.The only thing different
was that my dad wasn't feeling good. At first we
just thought he had the flu, but that day changed
everyone's life in my family.
That night my mom took him to the hospital
because he was getting worse.The next day he
was even more sick so they went to the doctor
again. When the doctor saw him his tempature was
105 so she called an ambulance they rushed him to
the hospital and started doing all kinds of tests. I
remember I was at home with my brother and sister
and my mom called and said my dad was going to
have to stay at the hospital and all of us were really
scared.
I don't remember a lot about the next few
days, its all kind of mixed up. On Aug 14 we found
out he had West Nile Virus. I didn't know a lot about
it but on the news they talked about people dying
from it so I was scared. The next day my my dad went
into a coma and the doctors had to put a tube down
his throat to breath for him, they said he had
encehpalitis. I didn't like going see him with all tubes
and wires hooked on to him but I really wanted to be
with him.
After 5 days he started breathing on his own
again and he started getting better. He couldn't walk
or use his right arm and he couldn't remember things.
He had to go stay at a special hospital so they could
help him learn things again.
He is back at home with us now.He can't work
anymore so he takes care of us while my mom works
now. I never thought a tiny bug could change my life.
I never really stopped and thought what my children went through, I was mostly thinking about me. When I was making a disc I saw this article my son had wrote,
I know that they went through some tough times, but never really understood. When I was feeling sorry for myself, I should of been thinking about them. They
are the real reason that I'm here, not because I'm some kinda hero. Simply because their love that they have for me.

jack--that was great--i can't believe your son took the time to write down his experience with the virus--or at least partial experience--i think that is
wonderful and just goes to show how the effects of this virus are multi-layered and how it exponentially affects those around us...
i think more family members could follow his lead! i'm certain he has more to say as do most of us...

That was a really great article.
Sometimes it is hard trying to imagine how others feel about the West Nile. You and I have talked over this before about how friends and family must feel about all this. However, I do try now to put myself in their shoes. A lot of them still want to deny it or brush it off as a "mental state of mind". But, I do try to be patient, although they may not be. I'm didn't realize how far you've come since when you were first bitten. I didn't know how bad you had it. I'm so glad that you were able to overcome a lot of that. From being a writer myself, your son is a good one, too. |

It's hard to see us how other people see us, I think we tend to under mine ourselves when we overcompensate to make others think we OK.
Mostly I know for myself I'm selfish and think of myself how I feel and it's when someone pulls the E-brake that I realize what I'm doing. There is a new construction glue called Gorilla Glue, the bond of it is almost unbreakable, this is true with true friends and family who loves you, no matter what, their they are. It's that bond that makes us stronger, as friends as well as survivors. Jack |

Hey Jack. I hope you are doing well. I was browsing the WNV support group site and came across the article your son wrote for school. It really was moving and even brought a tear to my eye. It should bring you comfort knowing there were people who were worried sick about you, even though I know you rather not be in that position. You know a little of my story, divorce and neglect while going through the toughest battle of my life. The rest of my family was unaware of my problems until I spent a week in the hospital three weeks after the major symptoms started. All I can say is chin up! By the way, how old was your son when he wrote that? |

Dave my son was 12 years old when he wrote this article for school, I was very lucky and still am to have a family who sticks by me all the time. Things do get
better, it just takes time.
